Internal Funding Opportunities

Hartford HealthCare
2023 Research Funding Program
Request for Proposals

We are pleased to announce research funding opportunities made possible by the Medical Staff of each Hartford HealthCare hospital. There will be approximately $100,000 available to fund investigator-initiated studies.  We expect most grants, including pilot projects, to have budgets of $10,000 or less.  We will make exceptions for more complex projects if they are fully powered and include a well-justified budget; these can have an upper limit of $20,000. These amounts should absolutely be viewed as limits, not targets.  Please request only the minimum implementation costs needed.   Any Medical Staff member affiliated with any HHC hospital is eligible to submit a Letter of Intent.

The project funding aims to support studies that have the potential to lead to new external grant applications and the dissemination of study results including peer reviewed publications, and national or international presentations.

We use a letter of intent process; the LOIs are due by January 13, 2023.
Click here for the 2023 LOI template.

Consults are available with HHC Research Department Senior Scientists.  We strongly encourage investigators to consult with their department’s designated senior scientist, especially if they are new to research.  These consults should occur as early as possible and should be initiated before January 5th to ensure that there will be sufficient time. Please contact us if you need assistance identifying the appropriate senior scientist.

Invitations for full proposals will be sent in mid-February with a mid-April due date.  Funding decisions will be sent out in early June.  The exact timing will depend on the number of proposals received.

Requirements:

Letter of Intent (LOI) – The letter of intent is the first required step of submission; it should include (all briefly stated):

  1. Name of the Principal Investigator and, if not a member of an HHC Medical Staff, the name of the co-investigator who is a member.
  2. Working project title
  3. Description of the research hypothesis/research question
  4. Rationale – brief statement of clinical and research significance
  5. Overview of the approach to be used, including a brief statistics plan.
  6. Budget estimate and justification
  7. Description of the research team.

The LOI should be no more than two pages using 11 point font and one inch margins.  It is to be submitted via e-mail to Anne Williamson ([email protected]) by 1/13/2023.

LOIs will be evaluated on the following criteria:

  1. Clinical/research significance
  2. Project methodology: clearly described and scientifically sound methodology
  3. Feasibility: should be feasible within the given timeline, budget and resources including sufficient numbers of appropriate patients.
  4. Appropriateness of budget: Funding is limited, please request only the amount of money necessary to allow the project to be completed.

Full application

An approved LOI is required for submission of a complete grant application.

Specific Instructions and templates will be provided for investigators invited to submit a full proposal.  Briefly, the application includes:

1. Cover letter: one page cover letter that provides the project title and the research team as well as brief statements highlighting the project’s feasibility and impact.  This should be able to be read independently of the full proposal.

2. For the body of the grant, include the following components:

  1. Executive Summary: Include title, full list of everyone on team, total budget, and brief summary of the aims of project and brief description of the study’s design (e.g., pilot; RCT, retrospective, observational, etc.).
  2. Research Protocol (10 page limit): All proposals must include a research protocol that includes the following:
    1. Literature and Background
    2. Specific Aims/Hypotheses
    3. Clinical Significance/Translational Relevance including how the project fits into hospital and departmental priorities
    4. Research design
    5. Sampling - Enrollment criteria
    6. Methods of data collection including all variables to be collected and the primary endpoints of the study and any use of specimens identified
    7. Statistical Analysis Plan including statistical tests to be used and a power calculation, if appropriate.  Note that pilot studies do not need a formal power calculation.
    8. Data sharing plan, security, storage and privacy
    9. References
  3. Implementation Timeline: Please include a projected timeline, which will be used for comparison against attainment of actual milestones in the required annual progress reports.
  4. A complete budget and justification
  5. CVs: All proposals must include CVs for the Principal Investigator, co-PIs and key participants; preferably as an NIH style biosketch.

We look forward to working with Hartford HealthCare investigators to make this funding opportunity a success.

Sincerely,
